To compare the cost of living in Medellín with other Latin American cities, we’ll examine several key factors: rent, utilities, food, transportation, healthcare, education, visa procedures, entertainment, and a 10% allowance for unexpected expenses or savings. In the following comparative chart, we can observe that cities such as Panamá,  San Juan, México, Montevideo, San José, Santiago, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro,  Monterrey, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Bogotá, Manaus, Cartagena, Lima, Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Quito, and San Salvador generally have a higher cost of living than Medellín. This city ranks 19th out of a total of 25 cities analyzed in our study.

Important Considerations for a Cost of Living Budget in Medellín in 2024

First, it’s important to note that estimating a budget—or answering the question, ‘How much money is needed to live in Medellín in 2024?’—is challenging and cannot be answered definitively. This is because each individual’s budget, economic capacity, and purchasing power depend on their unique profile, professional background, assets, and specific needs and circumstances.

For example, the budget for a young, single person—such as a digital nomad or student—will differ greatly from that of a mature professional or investor, especially if they are married or divorced, as these situations often involve additional financial responsibilities. Likewise, a retired individual will have different financial priorities and requirements, which must be considered within their specific context.

Each person's level of expenses will depend on their income and standard of living.

We do not intend to be financial gurus for anyone, but we can provide a fairly approximate idea of a general minimum budget, based on the research conducted and our experience in Medellín. Ultimately, your budget may vary, increasing or even decreasing, depending on some key factors, such as the type of property to rent or buy. An apartment-type studio is not the same as a more spacious place or a large house.

The location you choose also impacts the cost. If you opt for a tourist area like El Poblado (stratum 6-7), you’ll likely pay more in monthly rent than in Laureles, Envigado (stratum 5), or neighborhoods near the city center. Ultimately, your lifestyle and financial capacity will shape your final budget. Generally, those with higher incomes tend to spend more than those with limited earnings, so people often adjust their expenses based on their income level.

Ultimately, it’s essential to calculate your personal expenses, make adjustments as needed, and base your decision on this informed estimate

However, it is important to note that rent is often the biggest expense for some residents and expatriates. This is due to the high demand, not only from Colombian families and citizens but also from a growing tourist market. This demand has led to a significant increase in the price per square meter, which rises steadily each year. Additionally, the presence of hotels and platforms like Airbnb and Booking has contributed to the increase in rental prices, both in the short and long term, as a result of the massive tourism in recent years.

For this reason, it is no surprise that many expatriates are drawn to invest in the real estate sector, as it offers attractive returns in the medium and long term.

Conclusions

As of the closing of this edition, in October 2024, the estimated monthly budget for living well in Medellín ranges between 8,085,000 and 11,980,000 Colombian pesos, with an average of COP 10,032,500 (approximately $2,388.69 USD). This demonstrates that living in Medellín can be accessible for expatriates from many countries where the cost of living is higher.

As we have seen, the cost of rent tends to be the highest; it will depend on the location and the lifestyle you choose to have. In terms of costs for food, transportation, entertainment, and services, they are relatively affordable. Which can be attractive for expatriates looking for a balanced quality of life.

In any case, it is advisable to maintain a flexible budget, given that legalization expenses (residency visas) are a key point to always consider, as unexpected expenses may also impact the final cost.
