A Little Background

Digital Nomads for Good (DNfG) is a UK-based foundation that connects digital nomads with local charitable causes, particularly in Colombia. Their mission is to counteract the negative effects of digital tourism—such as gentrification—by encouraging remote workers to give back to the communities they live in. In Medellín, DNfG collaborated with around 18 local organizations that support vulnerable children, the elderly, indigenous communities, and stray animals.

Building Bridges Between Digital Nomads and Local Communities

DNfG connects digital nomads and expats with vetted local organizations, ensuring every partner delivers on their promises. One of their key offerings is one‑day volunteer opportunities, allowing travelers to make meaningful contributions through a single, low commitment but impactful experience. DNfG’s long‑term vision is to scale this model globally, inspiring remote professionals everywhere to embrace community engagement and collaboration.

Exclusive Interview with Digital Nomads for Good (DNfG)

M.A.:  What is DNfG and how did this initiative come about?.

Dominic: We founded DNfG in 2023 as a purpose-driven startup. We wanted to connect the global digital nomad community with local organizations in Medellín to foster meaningful collaborations that generate lasting social impact.

Sabine: Our partner organizations tackle critical social challenges with very limited resources. By working with DNfG, they gain access to global talent, volunteers, and support that helps them scale efforts and maximize impact. Our selection criteria include personal reviews, legal documentation, and strong community roots. We constantly follow up and measure results with them.

MA: How did the idea of involving digital nomads in local community projects come about, and what kind of collaboration do you offer?.

Dominic: The idea began when I was living in Bogotá. I noticed the contrast between the lifestyle of digital nomads and local realities. I wanted to contribute, but it wasn’t easy to find opportunities that worked with remote jobs. Also, donating without a Colombian bank account was complicated. DNfG was born to make giving back easy, transparent, and accessible—whether through time, money, or skills. Medellín has become a magnet for digital nomads and expats, and at the same time, many local organizations need support. We wanted to bridge that gap.

MA: What barriers do digital nomads face when trying to help in Medellín, and how does DNfG address them?.

Dominic: Many face barriers like lack of time, long distances, or language. That’s why we created a calendar of one-off volunteer events—social and low-commitment, but with high impact. It’s the perfect way to contribute without needing a long-term commitment. We share these activities on our Instagram: instagram.com/dnfgofficial.

Sabine: Donating in Colombia can be complicated for foreigners. Many foundations don’t have access to international platforms. That’s why, through dnfg.org.uk, we offer a secure bridge: you choose whom to donate to, and we guarantee the contribution reaches them. This way, we make the process reliable and accessible to all.

MA: What personal impact has this work had on you both, and how do you promote responsible tourism?

Sabine: It’s deeply transformative. Medellín has many realities. Being outside the tourist bubble gives you a new perspective. A bus ride can cost 10% of the minimum wage. These experiences change you, sensitize you, and motivate you to keep supporting on a human level.

Dominic: We’re not looking to attract more tourists, but to encourage those already here to make responsible choices: support local businesses, learn the history, and act respectfully. We also host monthly workshops on how to identify and respond to child exploitation, in partnership with our foundations.

MA: What are DNfG’s expansion plans, and how can the community get involved?

Sabine: Medellín is our pilot city. We want to expand to Bogotá or Mexico City, but we need to be sustainable and show measurable impact. Gaining the trust of new foundations isn’t easy. Many have been disappointed in the past. That’s why we prioritize transparency and results here first.

DNfG regularly shares opportunities to collaborate with Medellín’s leading charity organizations

Dominic: Every contribution counts. People can:

  • Join activities from our weekly calendar.
  • Donate through our website.
  • Share our mission on social media.
  • Volunteer with skills in marketing, photography, tech, or language teaching.

Every effort helps transform realities and leave a positive impact, even if just for a short time.

MA: Finally, what message would you give to those visiting Medellín who want to make a difference?

Sabine: Look beyond tourism. Medellín is more than cafés, coworking spaces, and mountains. There are stories of struggle, resilience, and hope. If you choose to get involved, you won’t just transform a community—you’ll transform yourself.
