Guatapé is a traditional town in the eastern subregion of the Department of Antioquia. It is located 79 km from the city of Medellín and is one of the biggest tourist attractions outside of the city.
The place has hotels, inns and restaurants for its 20,000 daily visitors.
Make sure to climb the Piedra de El Peñol; a 220m rock which is one of the town’s many phenomena. Entry to the top currently costs $20,000 COP. For those that would rather avoid climbing all 740 of the rock’s steps, there are helicopter tours running from $300,000 – $350,000 COP (6 – 8 minutes).
Additionally, Guatapé is the site of various recreational water sport activities in the nearby represa. From jet skiing for the adrenaline junkies to kayaking for those seeking tranquillity, there is something for all.
